To
make the bolts, glue one end of the 1/48" dowel through the hole
you drilled into the 1/12" dowel slice make sure the dowel is
flush+ with the opposite side, and allow to dry completely.
After the glue has dried use a
sanding stick to
smooth down the faux bolt head till it looks good - usually
rounded heads are used. Use the touch up brush to re-stain any
areas needed. Make 18 bolts, and have another 18, 1/12" slices
with holes ready to glue in place when you assemble the chair.
If you want, you can bevel the edges of the remaining 1/12"
piece to look like a nut.
Begin
construction of the chair by assembling the sides of the chair.
This is where the wax
comes in -- wax the bolt or dowel assembly liberally
with wax - work in and out of the hole making sure the
bolt moves easily in and out -- you may have to sand the
bolt a bit to make this happen. Important Note!
Do this with all the bolt assemblies.
The rounded bolt head is on the outside of the assembly
- the side closed to you -- the nuts are hidden on the
inside of the assembly.
Parts 1,2 & 5 are connected with bolt at the point
indicated - make sure you don't tighten the bolt (or
dowel assembly) so much that the joint doesn't move
easily, but not sloppily.
Important Note! Each part is added to the
outside of the previous part - Part 1 is on the inner
most position of the chair.
To the above assembly attach part 3 to the upper
hole of part 1, again allow the part to move easily.
Don't forget to apply the wax to the bolt assembly.
Were almost there -- The next step for the side assembly is to attach
part 4 to parts 3 and 5.
Finally glue part 6 to part 4 - centering and
extending a bit beyond part 4.
Now repeat the same process for the other side, making
sure you are making a mirror image of the one you have
just completed.
The final side
assemblies should look like the pictures below
